those are not dorado, no salminus, not at all, but they mimic them to blend in to avoid predation or is it the other way around. those are a brycon sp. probably byrcon whitei

You nailed it. Definitely a brycon

Something about the way the mouth is shaped on them had me thinking brycon as well.

very interesting i should have picked up on the tail structure and mouth not quite the tail it should be or the colors excellent Wes!!!!!Did not even pick up on it ...

I was leaning toward Brycon Hilarii as well. Salminus have huge mouths that would have been a dead give away if it was a true dorado. It looks like one of the many pictures I've seen from Mato Grosso do Sur in Brazil. Been trying to find these for sale for years...

I knew I could count on you guys

... I don't mean the rainbows in the tank ;)

Thanks!HarleyK
Those fish are Brycon Hilarii. I don't see them very often but have owned them.

The other fish are tetras not rainbowfish.

The picture was taken by Chris Lukhaup from Germany I believe last December on a trip to Bonito in Brazil.

The picture was taken in Rio da Prata (The Silver river) not a fish tank.

I bought a few Brycon Hilarii from Oliver Lucanus at Biotope (now Below water) in Oct 1998 and a pet shop called Pets Plus in Lockport New York in February 2001. In both cases the fish were small (2 to 3") and mixed in with Brycon dentex. The price was also very cheap at $6 and $7 respectively due to size and not knowing the species.

Some people claim they are vegetarian/herbivores but I found them no different to my other brycons and totally omnivore.

A beautiful active fish to own.

Thanks

BTW: There are Boeseman's rainbowfish in a tank underneath the nature shot. I know. The Brycon are such stunners that it's easy to miss the tank :)
