Really? I didn't realize that...it was identified and sold as an electric blue ahli...I actually ordered it as such, just didn't realize the species wasn't true. I googled and see that the s.fryeri and blue ahli are identified synonymously...I see the actual species name for the ahli, but didn't realize there was an another species (which wasn't mine).
S. ahli is a throw back to old trade names used in the 70's/80's. Outside of folks that have dove/collected in Malawi, my guess is only a handful of hobbyists have ever actually seen S. ahli. S. fryeri is the fish typically sold in the trade, also referred to as "electric blues", along with several other species of blue cichlids. Not to add to the confusion, but S. fryeri are also found in a number of different collection locations in Lake Malawi, and even within the same species the fish vary in appearance. Another good reason why IMHO folks that breed wild fish, should always only breed fish collected at the exact same location, as found in the wild. The Rift Lakes of Africa are large bodies of water, nothing saying that fish found at one end of the lake, don't vary genetically from fish collected at the other end.
