Macrophthalmus is no longer a recognised name as it was proven to be Aimara;

The extract i quoted was a pdf, but only a sample. They want money to see the whole thing but it's possible it's free somewhere so I'll have a look...

Does anybody else think that those two pictures are very large Blacks, they are supposed to reach 30". They don't have the snout of aimara or the Pellegrin holotype pictures of macrophthalamus which look like aimara.

actually,you may be right.
the reason i said aimara at first is because ive seen pics of big aimaras that were mostly black after being fished up.
also,those from the blackwater rivers were very dark as well.

in other news,my black is gone...replaced by 4 "pantanal" malabaricus.
will post pics soon,theyre about 3" and hiding in a 120g tank.

Was thinking the same thing...snout is really rounded/blunt like a black
