I'm curious to what you all think of my Jack Dempsey. I've had him for about 10 months and I'll be honest that I'm not too fond of its looks. I know they say not to judge a book by its covers but when it comes to a fish's looks and their character there is not much more to go off of..

I managed to take a couple decent pics and even adjusted the picturs to adjust brightness and contrast to show the best that he can look. In my opinion most of his body is a grey and brownish color with minimal "pearls". It just seems like I really have to look closely to see his pearls.
Please dont pull punches I wont be upset.

Am I expecting too much out of my JD? Do I need to allow more time for him to "color up". As he gets older will his colors and pearls improve? Is it my lighting (coralife 50/50 bulbs) 6700k and 10k caused tank to look super yellow).

Regarding water conditions and stress factor I can say that water changes are being done when needed. He's got plenty enough hiding spots and aggressions is slim to none in my tank. So I dont think stress is an issue.

pics as promised...

I'm not sure if thats the norm or not. I know that he only eats when I feed Massivore pellets. He's a bit skittish and a picky eater..

As for liking him as long as I know there is potential for him to look better then I'll keep him around. I'd consider trading him in for a nicer looking JD if I see one around town.

JDs don't grow at the same rate as Oscars.

I've had mine since Feb (bought him at 2"), and she's just now hitting about 5". JDs are slow growers and long livers.

I would be a little worried about that growth rate. Could be that you got a runt that will take a while to grow and color up or it might never. My female jack was around 7 inches in a year and I bought it a maybe 1inch. What are you feeding it? From the pictures it looks like a healthy young male that just hasn't matured yet. I think if you keep it's tank clean and feed it a lot of protein it will still turn out good.
