Please Read Need Help with my Gulper!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
uh oh, that's not good. that's exactly what happened to mine before they died. He will start to get more and more sluggish, stay upside-down on the bottom, develop small sores, start convulsing (especially when he senses food, so he can't eat), and then you'll wake up and he'll be stiff and dead. Hopefully this won't happen, but I lost 3 gulpers like that and never found a solution. Best of luck man :(

give details on tanks size and water params.

how long have you had it?
what do you feed?

etc etc.

temp of the water

i'm willing to bet his parameters, etc are all close to perfect. Mine were in 84F water, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, low nitrates, 3x25% WC weekly, varied healthy diet, and they all got this one by one, except for one of them.

could it be where he got it from?

i know alot of LFS that don't keep up with some tanks they put catfish in.

their excuse is that they live in a swamp so they'll live through anything.

sucks when i see that tho.

I think he got his from rich. If you read through the forums, a lot of people post YAY I GOT A GULPER threads, only to post HELP, MY GULPER IS DYING threads a few weeks later. This raises suspicions that it isn't so much the keepers fault as it is some special condition the fish need, or are being affected by.

I got this from another forum. Might Help

need help with my gulper cat..

about 2-1/2 weeks ago she suddenly stopped eating and hasn't eaten since.. i have had her for about 1-1/2 months now and has been eating regularly shrimp & mussels (handfed) when i got her .. but now she will come up, take the food (shrimp or mussels) and after a couple of seconds spit it out.. i tried hand feeding feeders but the same thing happened.. after the initial bite, she spits it out..

water parameters are: ammonia - 0 , nitrite - 0 , nitrate - 10 , ph - 7.4

i've moved her in another tank with silver dollars and feeders hoping she would eat but none have been missing ever since the move (1 week ago)..

some one from another forum suggested force feeding and showed me a video so i tried to do the same thing.. his gulper though swallowed the shrimp after the guy held its mouth.. mine did not want to swallow but just held the shrimp in its mouth then after 30 seconds of me holding her and struggling i decided i don't want to stress her too much and let go.. she then started "coughing" out the food and spit it out

..

hope you guys can help me out, anyone had similar situations and managed to get theirs to eat?

Look out for parasites.
My three small gulpers stopped eating after a few weeks, and then I discovered lice on them. I removed the lice, but the gulpers didn't start eating. It took three months for them to get better. I guess they had some nasty gill parasite - the medicin that eventually worked was Parazin-P (against lice, gill maggots & anchor worms in ponds).

update: after about a month of not eating.. i decided to try to treat with an anti-parasite (ocean free) and added a heater.. after a week of treatment my gulper finally ate and has regained her appetite like nothing ever happened.. so back to normal and eating from my hand..

I've had them a little over a month now. I feed them large shrimps. They where eating 2 a piece. Temperature is 82-83 degrees. Water params are fine( I check every 2 days) I have a aquar clear 110 and a XP3 filtering my 75 gallon. There are only 3 gulper catfish in the tank.

Well I went home to check on my gulpers and the one that is sick died.:cry::cry: I'm so pissed off right now.

Well the other two don't show any signs of sickness. I hope the get better and start eating!

I'm sorry to hear that man :(. Hopefully though your experience will somehow shed some light on what happened, and why so many gulpers drop dead. Keep an eye on the others. they're not out of the woods yet
