both, and i still think its bad for the fish.
Based on what observations? Have Hikari products had negative affects on your fish? I dont feel like staring a flame war but I just laughed when I saw this thread. If MSG was harmful to fish, why isnt there dead fish belly up in every 4th fish tank in the world?:banhim:

I really can't see Hikari being bad for fish being it's been fed for several years and if it was killing or harming fish we'd know by now.. I've been feeding it for a very long time and have never had a fish die from it...

It is not a preservative, I thought it was because it was listed as one in some literature from my doctor.

MSG tricks your tongue into making you think a certain food is high in protein and thus nutritious. It is not a "meat tenderizer". It is not a "preservative". The food industry is trying to confuse the issue by focusing on the "fifth" taste sense they call umami. Free glutamic acid is detected by the taste buds as a simple way to signal the presence of protein in a food, just as there are fat receptors to detect fats and receptors that sense carbohydrate or sweet flavors. The purpose is to help us discern real food from inedible matter. It changes your perception of not simply taste but the nutritious qualities of what you put into your mouth. However, and here is the main problem with free glutamic acid - It is the very same neurotransmitter that your brain and many organs including your ears, eyes, nervous system and pancreas in your body use to initiate certain processes in your body.

So basically it tricks us (and prob fish) into thinking the food is healthy. I just know what it does to me and would hate to have any of my animals suffer in silence. I respect everyone's opinion, to each his own, I simply thank the o.p. for bringing it to our attention.

Yes, our diets are different- but fish eat poo in their natural environment. I don't believe there is MSG coarsing through the Amazon. I believe as pet owners, it is our responsibility to keep their diets as close to natural as possible- and MSG being a particularly NASTY preservative is definitely not natural.

MSG is a flavor and color enhancment product and NOTa preservative.

Just wanted to point out to the original poster that if your going to bash something...you should at least know what it is. The reason it's even IN certian fish food is to make them want to eat it.

Many people in the world are alergic to peanut's...peanut butter and peanut oil. So many in fact that resturants post warnings about it's use... however that in no way makes the product unsafe or even bad for the majority of the population.

You assume that because you and a small handful of others are alergic and have problems with MSG that it's bad for everyone and everything...
There are a number of compounds in ALL pet food that can make most humans sick...let alone just fish food and yet you pick on one ingrediant that the vast majority of us humans can eat with no problems at all.

I'm fairly certian fish dont read lables or even think of food in terms of what tastes 'healty' or not. MSG is a flavor enhancement...pure and simple. I guess the evil duo of salt and pepper are pulling the wool over our eyes and making us think that foods taste a lot better than they really do.....I don't even want to get into the white death...(sugar)

sorry can't take credit, found it from a google search:) I thought I had copied the source as well, but must not have.

I think part of the op's point as well was to warn us that have sensitivites to MSG, just like those allergic to nuts, coming into contact with it can bother some:)

I still don't see the puurpose of having it in our fish foods, especially since other "flavors" they carry don't have it in there. By the way most fish food smells, I think it's probably flavorful enough, without adding extra chemicals.

Cbkurt...I've read the thread, and have'nt seen where anyones fish has died from msg. You are allergic and you panicked. Top of the line manufacturer's would not be trying to kill our fish. There may have been some out there that have died from it, we'll never know.
