Same thing happened to a friend of mine when he was selling his motorcycle. The guy had a shipping company (a friend) pick it up and the authorities were there waiting for the shipper. BUSTED as far as I know. Send all this info to your local cop shop.

I've never heard of a scam like that. But after reading that e-mail it totally sounds like a scam. But it's good to know what to look for though. Thanks for the heads up.
It's a common scam. Someone called our flooring store and wanted to buy 10 grand worth of flooring. They gave us a credit card. They also wanted us to pay for shipping, sending a wire transfer which also could be reimbursed by charging it to the card in the amount of $1000. The idiot girl who took the call processed the transaction, and the card turned out to be stolen. I told her it was a scam, and she bitc*ed at me. By the time she figured out it was a hoax, we already had 10 grand worth of carpet in our warehouse, and we had to pay to ship it back.

The cops may not want to do anything. You could contact your local TV station. They may do an awareness piece on it. You could also contact your ISP and your bank's fraud department. Send them copies of all the e-mail traffic between the two of you.
I know someone who was involed in an e-mail scam and lost 10 grand! It was even more obvious than this, but the person wouldn't listen to her friends and sent this guy the money to help him "get through customs." Like Fishmaven said, take it to the TV station.
