PLEASE remember to be KIND!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been described as blunt in the past, and probably been described as a lot worse. I do believe if someone is treating an animal badly(especially if they have already knocked back good advice) then so be it.
Animals don't have a voice, we do.
As fish people I think it's only natural to frown apon suffering and bad practice.
I also like to see praise and acknowledgement of those being fair to their animals or at least taking on board the blunt, yet well intentioned advice.
Not every situation is a Ray of sunshine unfortunately. On that cheery note, goodbye.

Well said Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 .

I'm not sure which thread(s) the OP is referring to because by and large all the ones i've looked at recently have been civil. Maybe she is referring to the very recent one regarding the 80g multi oscar tank where the backlash from everyone who participated was very negative, but absolutely necessary, and spot on.

Sometimes it takes a bit of negativity to get a point across but if a poster is just going to cry about us being mean then they need to post on a different forum, one which doesn't give a hoot about the welfare of the fish involved.

I didn't want to ask for which threads were negative. Ive seen way less negativity around here lately in say the last 6 months then in the past year/ year and a half before that. I think Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 , esoxlucius esoxlucius duanes duanes and most of the others are right on point. Unfortunately not everyone deserves nice or even respect sometimes. But instead of arguing and going on and on I just report it when they get stupid now. I recently reported a new "member" I'm sure others did too, was probably just a troll as everything he/she said was stupid. I tried nice on the first post and then just reported all his nonsense. It's way less stress with someone not worth it. Don't get me wrong I think a respectful debate is good, but the majority can't handle being told they are wrong even in a respectful way.
All that said I think good stuff has been happening here lately and it's been a pretty good mood overall.

I agree respect is mandatory but. because....
Fish keeping is a combination of art, and science its hard to weed out inexperienced opinion from facts.
In art, opinion is normal, and to be expected.
In science not so much, most info is quite cut and dried.
The problem comes in when, or if
10 experienced aquarist say a 50 gallon tank is too small for an adult oscar based on reality, but 1 or 2 inexperienced people voice the opinion that the tank is suitable, because its just fine after their 3 months as a fish keeper.
Is that opinion really valid?
And if a noob takes the advice of those 2 over the 10 without knowing background, the end result is often a disfigured, less than healthy oscar.
So to me, opinion is only valid when based on true experience, and scientific knowledge which is often not the norm on forums.

Sometimes it works the other way....
most freshwater aquarists have the "opinion" that protein skimming only works for salt water.
But is that opinion based on here say, or actual science.
Being a lab rat, I did experiments that proves it works just fine on fresh water, so mob opinion does not always make it right.
Below a video of protein skimming in my fresh water pond.
Anyone who has visited a waterfall like Niagara Falls, or Iguazu has seen it naturally occurring, yet it amazes me, how majority opinion can often be quite blind.

I totally agree, if a fish is suffering, there should be some things said and everything should be done to inform the owner with the correct information. What I don't condone is the shaming of those who are not harming the fish. Ie. shaming someone from buying from a chain petstore when it's all they can afford etc. I'm not saying I've seen A LOT of it I'm just saying I've noticed it increase slightly, and wanted to put out a friendly reminder that we are all one big family here and should treat each other accordingly :)

I am not referring to the post about the Oscar. I thought those comments were necessary due to the condition that was described. I am not calling anyone out specifically, I'm just stating an observation. I think it is important to point out issues when a fish is suffering in order to inform the owner on the correct way to care for that specific fish. With that being said, I also think it's important to avoid unnecessary arguments in comment sections, negativity towards those who cannot afford the most expensive fish of a certain breed etc. Like I said in another post, I'm not saying this is happening A LOT I'm saying it's something I've noticed more. This message is not meant to be an attack on the forum or the members in any way, it is just a little reminder to be kind :)

Where, on this site, have you ever seen this happen? I would very much like to see examples of this if you can provide them as I have never seen either of the scenarios you pointed out happen on this site.

I can try and find the comment again that I saw and send it to you if you'd like. I don't remember the thread title and already reported the user but I'll look now.

I would appreciate that, thank you. By any chance it wouldn’t happen to have been the following link?
