FYI Puffers died a lot more in any LFS than any Walmart stores. I have seen a large puffer order came to LFS and a week later 95% of them already died...give another week nothing left in their tank. My friend is a fish owner store and he said puffer fish is a total loss benefit for him but he's needed just cause of variation of fish selection in the store.
So are Columbian shark cats and pictus catfish, both have high mortality rates than puffers at Walmart.

I don't want have government getting involved with this. We all know what happened to other banned species because of the fear mongering to the public that is full of sheeple. There are many reasons why a fish died at Walmart and it's not just puffers.

What happened to them, the other banned species?

What do you think is causing fish to die at Walmart? I'm looking for expert opinions, so please share.

Walmart employees, general lack of care, packed tanks, etc. I'm with the don't get the gov involved side, while the horrible conditions at Walmart is bad, it would be better to get people to not buy fish from them. Although good luck with that knowing the general public.

Just know that with the American government that any regulations or actions taken by them won't affect Walmart, but will have harsh effects on your lfs when most lfs are struggling to begin with.

The other banned species never got available again and you will eliminate the puffer family from aquarium trade, resulting into an angry mob that will hate you for that.

Overcrowding, diseases, poor water quality, stupid employees and lack of proper care is what caused the fish died. That happened many times without any puffers in stock

Anyone who trusts government to do ANYTHING right is pathetically naïve at best. How's Obamacare been working out for us?

I give you credit for your passion, but what you wrote seems a little mis-leading??? Unless im reading it wrong, since as far as i know Puffer Fish do not release TTX from their bodies when stressed (poisoning other fish)...

The only way to die from them is by eating them, and even then, once being kept in captivity for a while, they start to lose their TTX toxicity because they dont have access to the food items in the wild which would help them produce said toxins...

Exactly

Actually, Mr Homer, in crowded conditions, puffers can even become ill from exposure to toxicity when in the bag during shipping. Wholesalers treat them with tetracycline.
Wild puffers are shipped without delay to fill orders, and are toxic for several weeks after capture. This is why they are separated from the rest of the warehouse stock.
As far as how dangerous this is to humans, i dont know, but i think its in everyones best interest to be informed about it. Especially if kids are going to stick their hands in the unlocked tanks at Walmart.
Tetracycline would do nothing to counteract ttx. it would be like taking penicillin to treat a rattlesnake bite. They are just in **** conditions at the wholesaler and probably suffer from some low grade bacterial infection. I ran a lfs for over 10 years and never encountered any sort of problems related to what you are suggesting.

Excuse me, I should be more thorough in explaining this. I assume everyone knows what I do , and much more.

I think we can assume the shipping process, in the eyes of a Puffer in a plastic bag, must be similar to a train ride to a death camp for a human being. Crowded, starving, confused, and soaking in their own waste. If they manage to survive sorting, shipping, and sorting again, all the time without food or rest, it this fair to say this experience would have a dramatic impact on their health and well being.

I have been told all about the terrible circumstances puffers, and other wild caught species endure, in the process of becoming part of our aquariums.

Basically, I understand puffers are captured in impoverished areas and taken to the "Compound" , a sorting, staging, and selling area somewhere in Indonesia Many many GSP die of suffocation before even leaving the country as they change hands. Puffers are kept packed n buckets by themselves, instead of being kept in more suitable tanks with bubblier s and powerheads for oxygen, like their expensive counterparts.
I'm fortunate to have supporters who are veterans in the export end of the trade. I'm told that nobody takes chances with puffers, cause it could ruin their rep fand make them known for selling bad product. Isolating GSP from the valuable stock is standard practice. Any trace amounts of TTX would add stress to an already stressed inventory.
As we know, fish carry a host of infectious parasites and diseases that remain in check when the there is balance. Ich, for example, is commonly part of the aquarium ecosystem, but if given the opportunity of stress, or unfavorable water conditions, it will present, multiply, and drain the life from their unfortunate host.

I'm not saying the fish are dying from Tetrodoxin poisoning.
I'm suggesting that Texododoxin MAY be contributing to the fishes failure to resist diseases already present in the filtration system.

You must wearing the tinfoil hat, because there is no proof that the water is full of Texododoxin at Walmart. How do you explained the fish deaths.......when some Walmart didn't stock puffers? Ironically the local fish stores never had any problems with the puffers in their stock.

As for the puffers isolated from their valuable stock, perhaps these puffers are known for fin nippers and very aggressive to other fishes?
