Pleco almost jumping

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my plecos did this before i got an air wand, but now i keep it super oxygenated. they never do this now, at all. and i can always see endless air bubbles flowing through the water. thanks to a fluval 404 with a way to adjust the outward flow as well.

I'll run the spare airpump and see what happens, thanks for the inf. Nothing much has happened for a few days apart from today where the big common got a bit giddy

That plecos can breathe air when necessary is kind of like saying 'human beings sweat to regulate their body temperature'. True, but it is still stressful.

my plec dart up and grabs a pellet every know and then maybe he is miskaing a air bulbbe or something for food

When my sailfin was a youngen i had him in a 3 foot tank with an internal filter/airater and an air stone, he never did the bolt to the surface, when i realised how messy he was, i upgraded to an external filter, took the internal out. He started to do the bolt to the surface, so i believe it's an aeration problem, i have since added (in a bigger tank) a 4 ft air curtain as well as a powerhead with aeration. Never had a problem with him since.

Thanks for the info, when he was in with my GG he never came out of hiding and that tank had aeration, since then I've been running air every other day, some days when it's off he jumps other he just eats:screwy:

Either way he started growing again, which is going to cause me huge headache in 6-12 months

All of my 4 smaller plecos have exhibited this behaviour and do it quite regularly. Greenterrorizers plecos do it also and we have noticed that a lot of the time they appear to blow an air bubble out of their mouths then race it to the surface and sometimes nearly jump out in the process but i have had both a not so aerated tank and massively overaerated and it doesn't seem to make a difference.. I thought it was some sort of bored pleco passtime almost like the climbing tower of loaches..:screwy:
