pleco and sand substrate?

is that a good idea?
cause i know that plecos eat algae off the rocks, but would it be okay if i had sand for the substrate and a pleco in it?
wont they like eat the sand or something?
please help, if you have any thoughts on this!!??!!??!!??!!??
 
i have sand in my tank wiht a clown pleco. he does fine! u cant see him cuz its 75 gallon and hes only 2 inches!! but hes in there!

RTCxTSN, 3 mono's, clown pleco, and a needle fish i jsut got yesterday!

he never goes on the bottom. so i have never had a problem. once lights go out he comes out on the glass and on the rocks. but in day time he stays in the root on the right hand side
 
I have 2 fancy plecos with sand substrate for over a year now. It's fine.
 
Size matters. I have an 11" pleco that was in a tank with sand in it and I woke up to a 75 pound sand dune in the center of the tank and a bunch of sand in the bottom of my AC110's. Large plecos and HOB filters could cause burned up filter pumps. I do have a 4" pleco on sand in another tank with A HOB with no problems though
