I've always kept all my plecos on sand and never had a problem. I have a 19" common pleco on sand and he does just fine. But I do agree if you have a larger one with a HOB it will probably ruin it at some point.

Most of my tanks are a mix of half silica sand and pea size natural colored gravels. Still no problem.
The biggest problem I have with the two is that their crap tends to float around in
a more visible way.
