Pleco Breeding tank

A 500 gallon tank could house a good colony of L200s, or some L14s. I believe both have been bred in captivity though L14 was an unknown trigger. Either way, you could do a lot of awesome plecos in a tank that size. But for breeding purposes, unless you have a huge amount of bristlenose, it is pretty much a waste. You won't be able to pull the fry safely and many will die. For larger plecos like the L14, or the L114, or L240, this tank size would be perfect.

I'm curious as to why anyone would want to breed pleco if there is always concern about LFS selling pleco. If people are so worred about a pleco invasion which happens when they grow so big and people let them into the wild, then would it be more logical to not breed them ?

The word 'pleco' refers to a family of over 400 known members. The fish commonly released is, you guessed it, the common pleco, an ugly brute of a fish that is mass farmed in Florida.

Google L200. L14. L114. People pay a good price for these fish and are not likely to release them, especially given the tank size listed; the fish will not outgrow the tank!

There are dozens of fish that people release for stupid, selfish reasons. Oscars, gouramis, pacu (oh gods the pacu) and tons of goldfish. Guppies, mollies. Tons of cichlids like the convict. We don't tell people not to breed these fish because of some other morons' behaviors.

For a 500 gallon, the OP could do some wonderful larger pleco breeding projects. The trick would be picking which species, and getting them at near adult sizes to minimize wait time!

Id say set up a 30 or 40 gallon and try some bristlenose. Use that 500 gallon for something a bit bigger and a little more "exotic". Look up the l234. A very beautiful pleco but they say it cant be kept with other bottom feeders. Maybe in a 500 it would be ok have another decent sized pleco.
