I know this should go in the pleco subforum but this is sorta critical.

I just looked in my tank and one of my 5 inch, 7 with tail, comet goldfish has a red line on his side...looks way bigger then my plec's mouth...but I've never seen a goldfish gain colors over night.

It looks like his scales are in the same condition as before, and where its now colored red there is still scales...

This is very confusing to me. He wasn't even slightly red where its red now and its basically the same tint as his crown.

my plec's are still small 3 inches 5 with tail, they arn't even aggressive to each other.

Lots of drift wood in my tank, maybe over the night the goldfish got stuck and hurt himself?

this is driving me nuts

there IS a patch of scales missing slightly behind the red, as you can see in the image...

but that was there when i adopted him

Goldfish can gain color too :) It just depends on how their cells behave. As they get older, they can gain orange/red just like losing black/red. It's just much more common that they lose color than gain it, but it looks like a healthy change in color to me.

Also, it happens commonly that matte scales are mistaken for missing scales on metallic fish. Is this a possibility? Maybe he's not even missing those scales behind the coloring?
