pleco is a subjective term. the whole argument is more or less futile.
but still enjoyable for the spectators!

I keep 2 clown plecos in one of my 10 gals. and 2 borneo suckers in another 10gal tank. and have an otto in a 5gal w/ my betta. The otto's seem to be the most touchy. and the clowns one of the easiest to find. depending what other fish are in the tank any of those would be my suggestion. Personally I'mmost fond of the clowns as well, they look like plecos and their stripes though not overly colorful still makeit an attractive little fish.

It's not scientific terminology, rather, a bastardization in usage of the species nomenclature of one former hypostomus plecostomus. Strictly speaking, that's the only acceptable taxonomic terminology in which that phrase is applicable. However, as it is used in the hobby, it can be anything you want it to be. I personally consider all loricariidae to be plecos, as they are similar enough in husbandry and the like, but other might disagree. idk.

Cheers for that, I hadn't made the connection to H. plecostomus as Plecostomus IME has been used to, as you said, refer to all loricariidae. I hope I didn't come across sounding obtuse in my previous posts. And sorry to OP for the thread hi-jack :)

back when I was a kid, we just called 'em "suckermouths" . . . they probably still do in some places

note: I'm not advocating that term, just relating how simplistic the terminology can get . . .

I guess the question never asked is why? What attracts you to a pleco(?) for your 10 gal tank?

well i got rid of the ten gallon and got a 25 gallon , wanted a pleco because some of them actually look pretty neat.
