Pleco for algae in green terror tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, It depends on the temper of the GTs. If they turn on the pleco and are aggro as some GTs I have seen, they will kill a BN.

No kidding. Keep a close watch on it for its sake. Do you have a backup tank to move it to in case they decide to kill off the invader?
Its really just a gamble. If they don't like him they will dispose of him very quickly when you aren't looking. As long as the BN doesn't try to steal eggs there is a good chance the GT won't even pay attention to it.

Yeah I have multiple tanks 2 60gal. 1 is empty except a female convict to keep it cycled, this one is going to be my grow out tank. I also have a 60 with some JD's.

Just because you add a Pleco that eats algae like a BN ,Rubbernose, or Pit Bulls doesn't mean it will cure your algae issues - they don't eat every species of algae only specific varities. Also the larger species of Plecos move on from algae as they get older - they will need to be supplimented. Larger Plecos create large amounts of waste which could very well Add to the algae problem rather than fixing it.

True that, I have 3 but still get spot algae on my glass that needs to be scrubbed off. My tank is devoid of every other type of algae except spot. This is the first time I have had a lot of this algae and I think it is because I am using a much stronger lighting system but that is something I will get the hang of.
However, I have 3 because I like them and the fact they eat some algae is just a bonus. Even BN plecos need to be supplemented, sometimes they even stop eating algae and get lazy because they have food readily availible when you feed your other fish.

Please get plecos because you like them and not just because of their algae eating abilities because you will probably be disappointed and they can even make the problem worse as they are little poop factories, even the small ones.

It is worth looking to see if your algae is a problem and if it can be prevented; for example by more water changes, less feeding, better gravel/sand vacuuming, less hours of light, etc.

Also if you get a large Plec you run the risk of the plec itself killing your Green Terrors (let alone eat the eggs), they can get NASTY when bothered.

I have a nice deep scar on my hand as proof, and the flowerhorn you see in my Av has a chunk missing on his side.
