Last week i picked up a new L240 vamp pleco and its the first pleco ive ever owned. It seemed fine and healthy but yesterday i noticed it started to look like his fins were torn and falling apart a little bit! The only other tank mates are two 1.5" clown loaches and the plec is about 6". Now today all of his fins look terrible they are all receiding they look like they are burning off!! I have done two huge water changes what is wrong what should i do! thanks for any help

sounds like fin rot to me as well, melafix and some aquarium salt 1 teaspoon for every 5 gallons should be good as new in a few days.

What size tank do you have? Sometimes water changes can fix the problem. If you let your water quality drop that sometimes happens. He should be ok. Melafix will sure help just keep on your water changes.

Fin rot is a bacterial infection. I've never had much luck with melafix but others swear by it. Worth a try.

My go-to medication for a situation like this would be Mardel brand 'Maracyn' or 'Maracyn 2'.

Best to treat the main tank, but this will make the cost of meds fairly expensive. Worth it though to see your fish's health bounce back and peace of mind that the risk of reinfection is eliminated.
