pleco photos L1 - L100

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok well to my knowledge L054 is Hypostomus sp '3' not Ancistrus eustictus. Also L061 is a peckoltia sp. not Hemiancistrus landoni. however http://www.webcityof.com/miff1053.htm has L061 labelled as Ancistrus sp 'Oyapick' which it also is not. those are the ones i can remember. I'd like to point out that i have nothing against this site at all, i think on identification, it is a lot more accurate than planetcatfish, and it has been one of the sites i've used to help me with the pleco species threads. These two plecos i've researched to be not entirely accurate and are mere observations i came across when doing it, but i completely big up this site, it rocks!!!

Thanks for pointing those out. Can ony one confirm what Davo said?

also there is a lot of wrong information out there, and because of the vast amount of plecos, and still counting, a lot are incorrectly named sub species and in general the classification is all over the place. you'll find (for example) a number of L numbers are of the same pleco, and were named different because they looked different when they reached maturity and lack of communication etc.

At some point, fish exporters started attributing the pleco name to other Loricariids. Since plecos were so popular this makes perfect sense because the exporters had to call the fish something that importers would associate with a popular fish and buy. The name stuck and so all Loricariids are now called plecos even though there is only currently one single fish that is correctly a pleco, Hypostomus plecostomus. In fact, pleco is now more widely used by hobbyists than Loricariid - the proper name.

The classification using L numbers was started when two German magazines began featuring newly discovered Loricariids in their magazines. Since these species were not yet described to science, the magazines began assigning them "L numbers". The German magazine "DATZ" (Die Aquarien und Terrarienzeitschrift) started with the designation L1 for the Loricariid which has now been described as Glyptopterichthys joselimaianus. Another magazine started the LDA numbers.

The "pleco" identification is exceptionally hard now diceiving common names, wrong and contradictory scientific names and a classification started by a couple of german mags are in place. Its almost worth starting again.

great info on both facts.

sweet!
