Pleco Pond and questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm reviving this as I have acquired a second common through someone on craigslist. The person's S.O. made a mistake and bought a common instead of a bristlenose (the pet store employee apparently told her that, I kid you not, "This won't get too much bigger."), and the lady, not realizing how false the employee was, went ahead and bought it.

The new pleco is in Q, only 3.5" and will be moved to the 55 gallon once the pond is set up and Disco has been moved outside. I figure it will take about a year and a half to two before the new one is sizeable enough to put outside with Disco.

Suffice it to say, I'm going to need a bigger pond (not that I'm complaining!). My question would be, how many gallons should I consider for TWO adult plecos when building this pond?

I've also decided at this point that my goldfish will remain in a separate pond by herself. So we can take her out of the equation.

If fed right it should reach well over 12" in a year. He will be with your beloved disco sooner than you think. I bought a batch of tiny bn's and wound up with a common pleco too. He started out at 1" and was growning around 2" a month and was fat and happy until I gave him up at around 8". I already have a 13" L001 so I had no need for a giant common.

Whether it grows quickly within the next year or two years, I'm just happy to have another :) During Q I plan on testing it's tastes, already has a slice of blanched carrot and green bean (ran out of zucchini and squash!).

Unfortunately I only learned within the last two years about the proper diets for plecos, so I hope that I can get the new kid to grow appropriately. Disco took several years to get as big as she is now, and only within the last year has she really started to grow more.

Thanks!

Well good luck and congrats on the rescue, be sure to keep us posted. My pleco's seem to love mango and bell peppers as well. I sware my pleco's eat better than I do...

Will do.

Disco hasn't shown any interest in fruits as of yet, but I'll certainly try with the new little beasty. Haven't given bell peppers a shot yet, should I be concerned about whether to use reds, yellows, oranges above greens?
