Pleco problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well, we just did another water change and added more salt.. so i guess i'll let the 3 days go by.. especially since we're heading for Sacto in the AM..

and Sunday night when we get home we'll change the water again do 2 50% water changes to get as much salt out as possible and treat with Maracyn 2. One last ditch effort before we give up and euthanize him..

If it is dropsy, salt will accelerate the disease. I find that plecos generally are not too tolerant of salt as it is, and with dropsy they often last only a few days. Hopefully he pulls through for you.

maybe we should do the water changes before we leave in the AM? leave him for a couple days in clean water? and then treat when we get home?

NEWS!!!

We did what you suggested.. sorta.. lol. We did the double water change (had to use some tap water because we ran out of the RO water, we need to buy more). We redosed with the flagyl (double dose, not my idea).

And we left to go to the convention.. we checked on Kirby this morning, his scales are starting to settle back into their normal places, the blood blisters are smaller, and his belly is starting to deflate..

He's got some pea residue in the tank from before we medicated him, he doesn't seem interested in eating just yet. But he looks much better than he did. If he continues getting better i'll try to feed him tomorrow.

Good, glad it's all good. Remember meds can become concentrated in food items and could end up poisoning your fish (OD like all the best rockstars).

thanks wyld and davo,

we're excited.. we (he, because i'm still not much use since my surgery) are going to do another water change today and remove the uneaten food. and redose with the flagyl (not a double dose this time).

we tried to give him some peas last night, but they just migrated to behind the filter with the other uneaten food.. so it's all gonna come out when we do the water change. I guess he's still not ready to eat..
