Pleco Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use to have 3 common Plecostmus together 2 were over 12" and smaller was 9". The 2 larger would go at it all day leaving the smaller one alone.

if they are younger, therefore smaller, i've kept many species together, but always seperated them before they became big enough to be boystrous

Some fight, some don't, the more different the species are the less likely they are to fight.
As to tank size, it depends on the species kept, there is a big difference between a 4" zebra and a 14" royal panaque.

i'd just like to add a question to the thread. for those that do keep more than one species in a tank, how big of a tank do you suggest to do so??

depends which plecos your thinking of? their adult size ranges alot, from three inches to that 3 foot beast thats been posted in another thread, now thats a monster :WHOA: :naughty:

If i had, or do have more than 4-5 plecos, would they fight each other? and there all diffrent breeds of plecos.
It should be alright. If you have 2 equal size pleco, it may counter some chase and 'pushing' but really a fight, but along as they're some hiding place, it should be fine.

I've 9 panaque in the 4ft tank, no problem..

Be careful what kind of plecos you house together. I can't think of the names offhand, but there are some exceptionally agressive species out there that will not mix with other plecos. Some won't even mix with other bottom-dwelling fish without a lot of fighting.

I used to have a bushynose an two common together an the bushynose always pushed the commons around an they were twice his size.

I have 2 comon pleco's they chase each other around once in a while!!
Sometimes even fin damage!!

My Royal is pretty aggressive especially when it comes to drift wood, he doesn't like anyone messing with his driftwood. Also I have a sailfin that does not go after other plecos but he is really aggressive at going after food and pushing others out of the way.
