Pleco Size

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My wifes old common was purchased at about 2 inches, and within a month had hit the 6" mark. Granted her tank was so covered in algae you couldn't see through the glass, and overnight he cleaned about 95% of the algae off the sides of the glass. within three months he was already at 12" and at the year mark he had hit 18". When we finally gave him away he was 22" and only 2 years old.

depends on what your "common" pleco is. the common pleco was term was given to L021 (Glyptoperichthys multiradiatus), which grows to 10". Other plecos like L022 and L001 (Glyptoperichthys joselimaianus-10"), L023 (Glyptoperichthys aruano- 10") and L083 (Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps- 18") are also sold as common plecos, so its kinda hard to guess. you got a photo of it?

Lets bring up the "it gets as big as it's tank" speech.

I have two Kittens. One I put in a kennel the other in a large room. They are both given food/water whenever they want.
The one in the room craps in a corner and it is cleaned daily.
The one in the kennel gets it every 6 months.

Kitten in the room grows to an adult cat and is healthy.
Kitten in the kennel died 2 weeks after I got it but it only lived to the size of it's environment.
