ok the big genus you want to stay away from is Pterygoplichthys which includes the common pleco. Most of the medium size plecos will work. I've had 14-15 types of plecos with my bichirs even several from the Pterygoplichthys genus (which were the only problems) the big thing to keeping them with bichirs is a variety of food and keeping them full
