pleco's for rift tanks ????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Most plecos would be ok just the high PH your Africans like you will have to bring them into it slowly then no problem I have had Bristle noses in the past and a few L No. like L091 , L128 (the 128 is right and i think it was a L091 but all the L No. can get a bit:screwy: ) they are pretty hardy fish you should not have a problem

plecos are soft blackwater slightly acidic pH loving fish. I would imagine this is exactly the opposite of your africans tank. However I think the most success are with bristlenose, and quite a few people breed them in the tank so there are a lot of generations worth that do very well in these conditions. I personally wouldn't do it, a lot of plecs are not so forgiving water quality wise, but also because many species don't do well with the cichlids. However it has been done by members so don't let me put you off. There are plenty of threads (even recently) on keeping plecos with africans that might help you. Not sure how well a L128 would do, they aren't the most hardy of plecs.

I had L128 in with mine but as I said I changed the water over slowly and they had plenty of hiding places but as I said the best success I had were the bristle noses. It works ;) when I finally broke the tank down a mate had the tank and all the fish and the plecos went with the Africans.

i have two clown plecos that migrate tank to tank between 4 tanks. they stay about 3 inches. do a great job

yea, not saying it cant be done, because there is plenty of evidence to the contary, just saying, is worth doing cautiously.

I agree... be careful never just throw in a fish that is not use to the water conditions. Check when you buy to see what conditions it was in at the store... Bristle nose are the best with africans... they can handle themselves... most of the who want to put them in I recommend them... I do not keep them even though they stay smaller their waste is really a problem in the sand... the poop more than anyother fish I have seen... just an observation...;)

Not sure what the pleco in my african tank is.Bought it as a common at petsmart but its 2 years old and about 6"great algae eater and has hanlded himself well in the oscar tank and the past few months with the mbuna
