How salty, many tolerate a sg up to 0.005 and some like the clown panaque (Panaque maccus) have been successfully kept at higher levels than that.

Never tried that. They are hardy but don't know about the amount of salt that you are talking about.

it's my roommate's tank so i'm not sure about the sg but i want to say it's higher than that. probably 0.010-0.015.

the guy at the lfs said he thought a royal would be fine. but he had no basis behind his theory. ( he just wanted to make a sale)

I told my roommate to stick to a common pleco. I’ve had them at about 0.005 in the past w/ no problems

As far as I know, there are no brackish water algae eater on the market. I've heard the closest you can get is a rainbow shark.

No Brackish Algae eaters is right!

Plecos come from the Rivers of South American, meaning they would prefer softer acidic water..

Miles, most never get near salt and a lot of the fancies are very salt sensitive but they are widespread and rivers end in seas, What I have been seeing is that some tolerate lightly brackish water. I sort of doubt it is really good for them though.
The Hypostomus ventromaculatus and this one (pictured) Ancistrus gymnorhynchus have also proven to be fairly salt tolerant.
