Miles, most never get near salt and a lot of the fancies are very salt sensitive but they are widespread and rivers end in seas, What I have been seeing is that some tolerate lightly brackish water. I sort of doubt it is really good for them though.
The Hypostomus ventromaculatus and this one (pictured) Ancistrus gymnorhynchus have also proven to be fairly salt tolerant.

That thing is ugly...But it's still a fish so I want one! Got to collect them all!

Oh I am not doubting they can tolerate some Brackish water here in there.. and I don't doubt that common plecos could learn to live in Florida's Canals, but are they breeding prolifically? Or could it be a possibility of so many people have plecos that outgrow there tanks, they just dump em in there and they find a way to survive? Common plecos are extremely hardy in most cases. I have seen tanks unkept for months with no filtration or o2 and green water, only to find a pleco in the bottom.

Hell.. I have seen Flowerhorns in full saltwater tanks, and Damselfish in low brackish tanks.. Dosn't mean they liked it.

Well, here in Brazil Hypostomus plecostomus and H. punctatus are sometimes found in brackish ecosystems. But I really don't know if they LIVE there or just can SURVIVE there. AFAIK, there are NO brackish water plecos, although some species can stand it for a while. My 0.02 ;)

Best regards.

Daniel.

i dont see any pleco living in brackish water, its not for them and thats that....just my opinion

I know for a fact the regular plecos are living and breeding in south florida in brackish canals. As to the level of salinity, not sure, but it's salty to the taste.
yep they sure are
