Plecos in Malawi aquariums

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
these plecos can poop too.

Ummmmm, which ones?

I have also hear nothing but glowing reports on Gibiceps.
I have had one or two tho and my suggestion is to get them big enough to hang. They are active even as they get bigger and I Believe they eat poop, too. They are nice looking for a scum sucking bottom feeder...

Most plecos can really add to your bioload, especially common plecos. And no fish "eats poop" they just create it. Vacuuming gets rid of poop

I'm a biotope kinda guy,I dont really like to keep different fish together who wouldnt be found near each other in the wild. But I have seen it done with the common plecos and you need them for the algae so go for it.

I just sold my 8" gibbiceps to someone with a 90g malawi tank. Loved that guy, wouldn't have sold it if I didn't think he'd do amazingly.

I always had common plecos for algea control. when i got my african setups i put one in those tanks. All was fine while the fish were young and small, soon as they got adult size they took a instant dislike to the plecos and shredded them, by then the plecos were so much larger than the african cichlids, i was suprised at how mean they were to it. Since then i wont put any new world plecos in with african cichlids, they would shred it till it needed to be in a quarenteen tank, i would nurse it back to health, put it back in and have to renurse it the next day. It would have been dead if i hadnt removed it. I never had that experience when putting the plecos in with new world cichlids, just the africans. That was what i found with the common plecos and africans.

Common/sailfin plecos s*** like no other Id go for gibriceps, para, or bushy nose (not Medusa too lazy)

I have a rhino and bushy nose in my 90gal malawi set up now I rarely see either of them but there is never much algae occasional some on the back wall but fairly clean for the most part

In my 75gal Tanganyika set up I had one para about 3.5" and never saw any algae in there

Ive had no trouble keeping plecos with mbuna and peacocks but they do often get shredded.BN plecos eat more algae than any other, try to get one thats close to full grown if you try it.
