Went to Silver Springs today with the family, and did the glass bottom boats, etc. Saw LOTS of BIG plecos - several species too I think - many 18+ inches (as well as other monsters like several species of gar, some really big carp, plus the real natives like the bluegills, bass, bowfin, etc).

For those thinking "collecting trip" yes it is a Federal waterway, so you can go there in a private boat. But you can't do much anything else I don't think... and watch for the gators too - we saw a few 12 footers today...

Gotta see the pics! Plecos are such a hardy fish, that they can become an evasive nusance very quickly. China is having that problem right now.

Here's my one crappy pic from my cell phone camera. These 2 plecs were in about 4 feet of water, about 15 feet away from me. 2 feet plus...

That water is very clear. Those Pleco's are the size of my dog.

freshyfishy - that water is filtered by all the limestone between North Carolina and Florida, comes out of a hole in the ground about 20 feet from where that pic was taken. There are lots of water bottling plants around here - Silver Springs has their brand, as does Ginnie and a few others. Best part is the temp is 72 degrees year round. Cool in the summer, warm in the winter.

Wow. you should go snorkeling there if its allowed.
