Pleco's keep dying

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just cover the tank with a blanket for a few days and don't give it any light. That should kill off the Algae. Then just siphon and clean.

Thanks all I am going to try the light approach and set it on a timer as to not accidentally leave it on too long. My other tank is on a timer and I don't have any algae problems. Thanks again for all of the help. I still may use this as an excuse to upgrade the size of the tank. LOL....... But honey, the folks on the forum said 10 gallon tanks are death traps for fish and you don't want Aeris' heart to be broken when all of her fish die. LOL Yes My daughters name is Aeris like in FFIV. For those of you who are not video game geeks like me it is a video game for playstation.

Well, I have decided the tank is cursed. LOL I got rid of the algae problem with the light issue. Had them on way too much. And I have lost more fish. I lost the last golden algae eater and two of the guppies that I decided to put in it. One day they are fine the next they are dead. I sat there for a good hour examining all of the fish. None of them appear to be sick in any way. Nobody swimming funny, no slime, no white spots, no visual signs of external parasites, nothing. I think my daughter is just going to get a new 29 gallon tank for her B-day in December. Maybe even sooner so it can cycle. My son has a 20 and that is the smallest tank I will do after I get rid of this one. Maybe I will turn it into a terrarium or something.
It definitely has something against fish.

Where did you get this tank? is it secondhand? If so, there is a possibility the previous owner dosed chemicals in there before. Check water with copper test kit for any copper traces.

Nope it has been mine since new. I have not tested for things such as copper but the only way that would be present is if it came in with the water. Like I said I think it is cursed. I don't think the kids put anything in there. I asked them and they are real good about stuff like that because they are well informed that it could kill there beloved pets. So I don't believe something was added by accident that shouldn't have been. The one thing that I could think of was a while back. Son overfed the fish. And it did not get taken care of right away I was out of town when it happened and the tank grew some awesome blob bubbly thing. I completely disassembled tank cleaned it thoroughly and even put a new filter on it all together and recycled it. Did not have any problems for a long time and now this. Been like a year since that happened though so I don't think that has anything to do with it. No glass cleaner is used on it either. It's just weird I have never had anything like this before and I have had small fish tanks all my life. Just one of those battles I don't think I am going to win and I really don't think the ten gallon tank is worth it. LOL maybe I will start a cricket worm farm in it for my ocars. LOL

No algae would kill the plecos. Sounds likie the algae eaters to me. Getthem out. Then buy some algae wafers and give them twice a week and they should be fine. Also pleco hate salt so does your ten have a concentrate of salt?
