Plecos that DON'T eat wood?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a L18. Wild caught. It prefers alge and omega one supper veggie disks... I have several sepcies other than that. General rule is that rasping plecos love wood. they will also go after your silicone that has alge on it. which means if your rasper royal etc is large enough after time his large raspers start to degrade and take away silicone in your tank.

"panaques" are raspers btw... steer clear away from plecos that have rasping teeth. If you value your tank and wood/driftwood. hypan's are generalay carnivores. L128 blue phantoms seem to like a lil of everything, but i have ponly seen them eat alge off from driftwood. A large panaque pleco with a rasping mouth will dissolve driftwood only in a matter of time. They also like to grab ahold of discus and eat theri slime coat etc... You must do the research and find the right l# for your set up. Id look for L183"s aka white seam bushynose, also aka starlight/galexy bushynose plecos. they dont get huge, they eat a lil of everything and they wouldnt degrade your driftwood. or a L128 blue phantom or a L200 green Phantom. You may be able to find these locally in your lfs.

good luck

1st of all all pleco's rasp, so it has nothing to do with "rasping teeth."

Secondly, unless the panaque is rather large it will take years to "dissolve" driftwood.

3rd I have never heard of a panaque attacking discus or any other fish in order to suck their slime coat. So saying they are prone to this is an extreme stretch.

Other than that, good advise...
