I have a planted tank with Tahitian Moon Sand. I've had terrible luck keeping plecos in it. Loaches, Tetras, Dwarf Cichlids all do fine. Plecos die early and often. I've lost several Gold Nuggets and Queen Arabesques, even a pair of Bristlenose adults didn't last more than 6 months. I am wondering if they are accidentally ingesting the sand and dying from it. Any thoughts?

I have a gold nugget L018 and a royal L191 in my 125 gal with tahitan moon sand. They have been there since last spring without problems. Do you have driftwood and are you using some algae/bottom feeder pellets?

What spkehl means is, are you actually putting food in just for the plecos? Many people feed the other fish and assume the plecos will get the leftovers

What type our food have you been using Wurm? Any signs of distress after they have died? Any black discoloration on the under bellies? How big were they?

Sent from my DROID RAZR using MonsterAquaria

No black discoloration. One had an extremely distended abdomen.

you know i always liked moon sand but recently in my last order of it i had to wash out a ton of this black oil slick, it literally ruined the bucked i washed it in, it's covered in this really hard to remove black oil slick. i would not recommend it anymore to anyone. could be the residual oil i experienced killing them off? hope that's not the case.
