Pls help identifying this plant

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Whilst an easy plant to grow, it’s actually difficult to grow it well in a tank under lower light sources. This is typically a colder water pond plant which likes light and a muddy bottom.
You may find in a tank it gets a bit straggly and drawn.

Curious where it was found? In nature? What country

I have a similar plant that may be Hydrilla, although it was pulled out of Lake Gatun in Panama, it is feral here, but originally native to India.
Similar looking to Elodea, which is native to North America.
When I first pulled Hydrilla from the lake, it was in heavy, direct sun, and looked like this below.

In my more shaded tank if is much less filled with leaves (1st pic above).
I have placed some now in my more highly lit tank, direct sun, leaves are filling in with more thickly (left side below) and the green is more intense.

Elodea has 3 leaves per whorl, the leaves appear smooth, but are finely serrated.
Hydrilla has 3 to 8 leaves per whorl, and the leaves are serrated.
Egeria (native to Brazil) has 4 to 6 leaves per whorl, with smooth edges.

In India, I might expect it to be Hydrilla.
Here in Panama it can grow to 25ft (an inch per day), and forms dense mats on Lake Gatun

You can see it just below the surface, in the upper right of the photo above.
