pls read.Planning to buy a bichir.

i'm planning to buy a banded bichir if that is the one that grows 1 meter. i'm just wondering if i can feed it meal worms and sinking pellets only. Or do you know any diet? because i'm new to this fish. And i'm also wondering if i can put it with my 6 inch ghost knife fish with a 4 inch banded or the largest bichir together. tnx

The Banded and Senegals are good tankmates for the BGK as long as the Knife is bigger than them.

The largest of the bichirs is Polypterus endlicheri congicus...which, I suppose, could be called a 'banded bichir'. Bichirs should have a varied diet. I feed mine...frozen silversides, frozen 'krill', frozen beef heart (occasionally), live earthworms, fresh seafood from the supermarket like shrimp, clams, etc., and pellets (I personally use the Hikari brand of sinking carnivore pellet but others will work). Their main food is the pellets but they get frozen or fresh food at least a couple of times a week.

Your 6 inch ghost knife (what kind of 'ghost' knife is it?) will be OK with a 4 inch bichir but if you get P. endlicheri congicus then the bichir will eventually grow to a large enough size that your knife fish might become a menu item.

its hard to say what it is based on the name 'banded bichir'. i suppose any of the several species with bands could be called that. if you can post a pic, we can tell you what it is and how big it'll get...

I had a 6'' BGK disappear overnight in a tank with 2 6'' senegals and a 6'' del. There was nothing left, no corpse no tail... it just disappeared. Be careful.

my bichir eats anything and everything. when i say anything i even meen algea wafers. oh well at least hes getting a ballcanced diet lol

if it gets a metre long then i think he is talking about polypterus endlicheri congicus, i didnt see anyone post a scientific name for you, this will help a lot with your research
