I recently recieved a cracked 30 gallon filter and fixed the leak with plumbers putty because i am impatient. will the plumbers putty in the filter kill fish.
I posted this in two threads to get a quick responce. so... Twice. and no silicon was not accessable at the time that i had the putty... so of course i put the putty on and its been holding. i will test it out on feeders first before anything else
its safe but not a permanent fix. invest in some silicone or epoxy and get a good repair on it before you set up the tank. better safe than sorry, especially when you're dealing with prized fish.
Plumbers putty is petroleum based and leaves an oily residue, so I wouldn't use it in an aquarium. It is used for sealing between two flat surfaces such as the bottom of a faucet and a sink - not for plugging leaks, so I would not trust it to hold.
