plumbing experts please help - i want it quiet

^100% absolutely!

It is much better to start with a smaller hole and make it bigger if you need to. I suggested a 1/4" because I think that's the size that a piece of airline will fit into snuggly. Then you can use an airline valve to control the air intake manually.

thanks for all the advice guys, after much experimenting i have got it silent, i wanted to try using the left overflow to siphon the water as i knew the siphoning method is silent, then leave the right overflow durso to control the water level, to do this i needed to add a valve to the left overflow pipe near the sump, i did not have any valves so i had to improvise. I fitted an endcap onto the pipe where it enters the sump and i drilled this small and drilled it bigger gradually till i got the correct flow using the siphon method, the hole ended up about 17mm dia and i removed the durso and fitted a grid pipe instead.

now the sound is amazing its so quiet :headbang2

there is a light trickle noise from the right overflow pipe but ill fit a valve to the bottom of this so it fills with water and this should make it totally silent

THANKS EVERYONE :D

So if i hear a slight slurpin/sucking sound is the hole in the cap of my durso too small?

Got any pics/video?
