Is your tank drilled?

If so, this is the sump intake I have planned… it will work equally in both function and silence with any sized pipe… It will pick waste up from the bottom of the tank as well as allow the pump to be turned off without draining the tank…

I’m not a fan of overflow boxes so I have little to offer in regards to their usage. In my opinion, if a tank is not drilled it’s not worth using a sump. Others disagree and couple offer you better advice on how to approach that situation than I could…

The tank will be drilled without overflow boxes; the return pipe comes straight up from the bottom of the tank.

well the just keep your retruns as close to the top of the water as possible or figure out how to design some thing that the water will hit to soften the blow on the water with out looking like crap.

can u try to design something else to extend the return as to have it underwater? or would something like that be totally impossible?

The water returns through an elbow. The elbow is set a 1/4" above the water line in keeping with the design.

Will the return pipe size and/or number of pipes affect the amount of noise produced as the return water flows over the surface?

I am not trying to achieve silence, just a lower noise level.

i dont think the size of the return pipe is gonna make a noticeable difference in noise... but if its just an elbow couldn't you just get like a 90 degree angle and toss it on the end? paint it black to make it less noticeable and viola you got a silent tank :D
