Ok im getting ready to plumb my 225 tank soon and plan on running a 60 gallon sump. The set up on the left was my orginal plan. I have 2 single 7" filter sock holders so i was wondering if i could put 2 on each end under each drain and run the pump from the middle? I would also be splitting up the ceramic media.

Is there any major advantages or disadvantages to running it this way? My reason for wanting to change it is that the plumbing would probably be alot easier.

Any advice appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I don't see a reason to split up the sides. If anything, it becomes a less efficient use of space since you have to make room for mechanical and biological filtration in 2 places.

I would and have done the first pic with both filter socks on one side. It gives you more space for your bio media

..the first pic looks much more efficient.

Decenter here. I think the one on the right is better. Same amount of room for media. and less turns for return. All indications say if same media fits it will do the same work. I might have an issue also with the imbalance of appearance. I like equality.

Exactly. I don't know how you guys can say one is more ineffecient than the other. If you're taking the exact same media from diagram #1, and splitting it up into two equal parts as shown in diagram #2, what's the problem? If it makes it easier to plumb and maintain, why not?

Also, each drain line would need to travel an equal distance to the sump, helping to ensure that each filter sock is handling the same amount of water. Having a longer route and possibly more bends could mean the drain line farthest away from the filter sock could flow less water than the other.

My $0.03

it's more work and not as good in the long run.

Not as good in the long run? How so?
