Yes, but you are free to apply it as thick as you deem necessary for your particular project. I had mentioned this in another post but one way that you can get even deeper penetration into the wood is to wash it with Pond Shield and then apply your normal Pond Shield coating.
Washing is simply thinning a small portion of the material out with denatured alcohol (will evaporate out quickly) about 30-40% thinned. Then wash your wood with it and let it start to set up. Then apply your 10 mil coating to it and any fiberglass tape to the seams (should you decide you need to). This way the Pond Shield is forced extremely deep into the wood and it's like thousands of tiny little fingers grabbing hold from inside the wood.

Well not necessarily. It all depends on how you react to something as mild as latex paint fumes. Frankly my wife hates any paint smell, even the most mild, therefor that includes Pond Shield as well 98% of my customers that comment on it or are asked tell me it never bothered them. Pond Shield has no solvents in it so the odor is very low. Now, if you mix a wash like I suggested, that denatured alcohol will bother anyone until it evaporates. So you might open the windows until you're done with that.

I ask because I keep a number of plecostomus and they're known for rasping through epoxy paint, scouring acrylic tanks, and sometimes eating silicon.

Koi do much the same thing in a pond and I have not had anyone complain about them. Pond Shield is pretty strong once it's cured and has a pretty high abrasion resistance, but not tested with a plecostomus, sorry
