Plywood tank build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's good you found somewhere i would like the know the product you end up using and that is probably one of the nicest builds i have seen.

Did alot of sanding today. The sun finally came out and dried off the deck finally so I dragged my project out for a few pics and to give me a chance to give my workshop a good cleaning.

I figure I've got one good day of sanding left then it'll be time to make some serious decisions about sealing. I have a couple quarts of polyester resin and some chopped strand glass and some bondo. All left overs from the last car we did. Thinking I will do all the hole filling with the bondo, thin out the resin and give it a good coating to soak into the wood and give me a nice base for some kind of epoxy paint. Figure I'll get some carbon and mix the black color into the polyester resin that way I don't have to tamper with the epoxy. Any advice on some budget but quality sealing methods would be appreciated as I'm still undecided about what I want to do here.

I took a little time and set up an album with all the pics I've taken so far. Feel free to check it out and give me some feedback.

Ha ha went to the marine supply place today. Would have cost me over $300.00 to go with their epoxy. I told the guy I was building a fish tank not a speed boat. A little disapointed I just decided to fall back to about plan "C" and use polyester fibreglass. I'll get some kind of epoxy sealer later. My dad had a huge roll of matting and about a quart and a half of resin I talked him into donating so I did some prep work and laid the first sheet of fibreglass. Looks not too bad considering I've never used cloth before. I didn't mix quite enough resin so there was a panic moment there near the end but I had used less hardener to give me a little more time to mess around with it so things seemed to have work out ok.

There's not much a selection locally for epoxy based paint. A couple of places sell this Rustoleum epoxy shield, has anybody used that, if so how well did it work. I can buy it for less than a hundred dollars a gallon so it's high on my short list of options.

duraplate 235 nsf if you have a sherwin-williams out there they carry it but i don't trust it alone if you use fiberlass resin to coat your whole tank before you paint no prob's.

fiberglass resin 40.00 for enough to do your tank. duraplate 70.00 (120.00)

like i said before if you go to sherwin williams don't leave until they go get it for you lol

awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

im planning my own diy plywood tank as well keep us posted
and the concept is freakin cool

well i looked at your project again and its really awesome

makes me wanna start my own diy asap

I laid the fibreglass matting in the bottom and back of the aquarium yesterday, they both came out really well. I started to lay matting in the front this morning but it was turning into way to big of a pain with all the small ledges that make up the window frames. That matting just just won't work around corners and stay tight to the wood.

Well lesson learned so I went to the body shop and picked up a gallon of good old short strand and some plastic spatulas. I mixed up a batch and it's tedious work but no more so than the pure resin was. This is going to create a pile of sanding later to get the window ledges perfectly flat but I've done so many cars that this is work that I know well so it's just a matter of patience. It's pretty chilly in the shop today so I have lots of time to fool around before it starts to "kick" on me.
