plywood tank questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey, thanks. Still a little itchy, but I think I'm coming around to the idea of using plywood. It's the only way I can afford a big tank at this point, but if I had to choose between an iffy tank and waiting, I'd wait. Another big advantage is building it in place.

I certainly appreciate the ideas and coating products.

Of all the plywood tanks you guys know of, how long have they gone without leaking?

Thanks again,

Joe

Cool. The best thing I can tell you is to take your time, research and see whats the best fit for you. I've seen a hundred different ways of doing a plywood tank and most of the same folk just as happy with the particular way they did it. Have fun.

I used drylok on my 600, its a year and a half old and still watertight.

Not to hijack this thread but I feel that it was a good thread to post it since it is about building one......what is the best way to screw the boards together? I have seen some where the sides are screwed on from underneath the bottom and other where the sides are screwed to the bottom going from the side into the bottom. I thought I read somewhere where you should screw the side into the bottom from the bottom (fig 2). Did that make sense?

Hopefully the attached diagram will clear up my babble.

That's a good question. I'm trying to imagine a lot of pressure pushing out on that bottom corner. I can't see that it mattters, but I don't know.

Any plywood tank threads you guys consider must reads?

Talked with a guy from Pond Armor and he convinced me to glue cement board to the inside of the tank before coating with Pond Armor. Really starting to dig this plywood tank idea.

Now that I've thought about it, I agree that fig. 2 would be the way to go. I imagined myself inside the tank beating out on a bottom corner with a hammer. I think that fig. 1 would yield before fig. 2.

The sides should sit on the bottom in my opinion with the screws going through the bottom into the sides. That way the outward pressure of the water is working against the shear resistance of the screws instead of pushing them straight out from the bottom. That's how I'm doing mine, anyway.
