Plywood Tank Questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Actually I too thought you were making a double layer of glass :D .

Now that I understand correctly, I would go the same way. And the divider could be made a little wider and tastefully shaped on the front side with a router.

As far as sealer, there's also http://www.sanitred.com/ it cures flexable. There are several others that flex too. If the tank flexes just a bit, epoxies (in the corners especially) can crack or separate and the pressure (2000lbs of water) will drive water thru the smallest crack - swelling the wood and compromising the seal from the other side (and rotting the wood).

I'm not trying to scare you off, just make sure the tank is rigid.

And there better be pix coming soon or else (Don't make us come down there  )

Good Luck,

Dr Joe

I thought about products like sanitred but decided against them just incase there was a problem with silicone sticking to it for installing the front glass.
Just bought some west system resin for the job. Got a good price on it so couldn't resist.
I ll take into account your point on springing a small leak and ruining the plywood. For $20 a sheet extra I can buy form ply which is water proof and has a perfectly smooth finish. I have read some say its over kill having water proof ply but it won't be if I get a leak. I'll probably use a polyurethane adhesive for the ply, still looking at that point.
Probably order the timber tomorrow still working out what I want.
I get the hint about the pix but as yet I really have nothing to show but 2 panes of glass and some west system resin. When I build the front frame I'll throw a few pix on here. ;)

That sounds like it will be sweet. I'm going to build a 200-300gal soon the same way.

Make sure to put up alot of pics when your building the tank.

Keep up the good work!:headbang2

:D

I ordered the timber today for the tank and the stand. Should be delivered tomorrow. I haven't told my girlfriend about this yet so if you don't hear from me again you will know why  Tank should hold around 330g over 6 times what my present tank holds. I ll cut all the timber first then go buy the screws and glue to hold it all together. :)
Starting to get a little excited about the prospect of having such a big tank but gotta be patient cause I know christmas and the school holidays are going to hold me up somewhat.

Two things:

1) Measure twice...Cut once.

2) Don't leave enough material around for your DGF to make a lid with or it could end up being a coffin

Keep us posted.

I now have all the timber delivered. Anything I have missed can be bought as its needed.
At present about half way through making the tank stand. I ll post some pix soon as I can get the camera out of the GFs car which she has at work.

Couple of pix of my bare bones stand. Its all I had time to build today, tomorrow I ll start on the tank front and cut the form ply into the right sizes.
