Plywood Tank Resto: Recombobulating my 200

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you decide you don't want to spend the money on carbon fiber a friend of mine used a burlap sack to match his fenders to his CF hood. It looked pretty flawless. If you lay the base color then stretch the burlap over it and spray the next color it looks like a weave.

Yeah many fabrics work with epoxy and polyester resins, but do not always have a great lifespan. If I was going to use a substitute I'd probably just use glass cloth and pigment the resin so the weave is only visible under the right light. It might be cool to use a cotton woven or knitted fabric with a cool print on it too, but for now I'm sticking with the carbon or kevlar idear.

Nothing to really write home about. Did a lot of sanding and filling this weekend. Most of which you can't actually see, but the front is sort of flat and straight now. You can see I didn't exactly do a smooth layup on some of the interior walls, so I've sanded it quite a bit and will be putting another layer down. I doubt it would leak as-is but I want the interior walls to be flat.

Been a long time sine I've seen one of your posts.. My DIY is still holding after several years. How is the other tank holding up, the one with 2 panes of glass?

Yeeeah you know I get distracted from my various hobbies by my various other hobbies, sometimes for years at a time :p. There's a relatively recent pic of the 600gal tank in post #7. It's still holding up well. I'd really like to drain it and clean it and go over the coating with a magnifying glass, but it's not leaking and it's sole occupant seems happy, so meh :p

He hasn't really grown much since I got him. I don't feed him a whole lot, but I think he might be having a bit of a growth spurt, as he recently killed his tankmate trying to eat him. :p

I've actually got 3 juvie RTCxTSNs that are going to be joining him in there when they get big enough.... which I think is going to be frighteningly soon given how fast they are growing now.

The hell with that. I'm sick of building things!! Walmart 12' inflatable pool in my basement. Done.

OK, progress on this guy has been slow due to snow clearing up and new parts for the car arriving :D anyway, I've got one layer of glass over the entire interior and I'm going to do another I think. You can really tell that the latest couple of patches I've done turned out WAAAYY better than the first few, so I want to sand is smooth, fill the bubbles and go over it again. Hopefully if I can find a block of time to devote to it, this won't be a huge delay in getting it watertight.

Latest splotch of glass:

You can see I've filled and sanded the front a few times (god I hate sanding) but it's getting to the point where I'm almost happy with it. The top two corners were a mess, but they are almost built back up to perfect and sanded square.

Oh and all the through-wall holes in the tank have been plugged and glassed over on both sides:
