Limited space? 8ftx8ft = 64 squarefeet of water surface and you're concerned about losing 3/4" on each side? Man, just brace it, you'll be losing 3% volume and gaining 10,000% in structural integrity... no brainer. Trust me, you don't want that leaking, not only because of the amount of water, but that gut dread you feel when something you worked so hard on breaks. I know it well, and plan for it.

If you are really not going to brace it, then go 1".

yeah, don't be cheap like me and actually build a cover for it. I would say to build a viewing panel in the front, you'll enjoy it more in the long run. I'm gonna be doing that to mine because a top view just doesn't really do it for me anymore.
