I see HarlyK's point and it's a good one. Don't support lousy shops and hopefully they will go away.

I also see the flip side to this, if I saw an animal in a pet shop that was going to die because of the stores incompitance, I would feel inclined to "rescue" the little guy.

Perhaps another way of looking at this is if you save an animal in this type of situation, great, but don't continue to buy your supplies there and educate your fellow aquarium & pet keepers to avoid such a shop.

I can see this to, but heres what I think, I have seen and read so many things about people looking to buy fish and not wanting to spend more than $5 on a tank, filter, food, and fish. It is these people that dont care about what type of fish it was, I am sure some people would go in that store, see the oscars with holes in the head and think that they were just part of the fish :screwy: . That is why I think I would have done the same as monsteroscar if I was in his shoes, because that pet store would prob not go out of business too soon, so it is up to people like us to save the fish that others may not care for or buy just to let them suffer and die.

How big is the oscar?unless hes about 3"chances are he wont get better in a 29 unless your doing daily water changes

so harley you don't applaud him for trying to save the life of a fish that would most certainly die? hmmm... so why are you in this hobby agian?

rweedon, think about it:

He buys a sick fish and brings it home. That means profit for the fish store, and they will stock up again. Since their bad handling and housing of fish didn't have a negative impact on their business, they will continue to sell sick fish. The more you buy from them and "rescue", the more fish will be restoked and face the same fate. You save one but set up many other (restocked) fish for the same fate.
--> one is saved but many others get sick/die

Scenario B: He leaves the dying fish were it is. Option 1) it dies. The fish store has lost the money it invested in the fish. 2) Others see the sick/dead fish and will not purchase any fish in this store due to the obviously low quality and the lack of respect for the fish they sell. 3) someone else "has mercy" with the fish and buys it. But then, there is only one idiot, not two, who gives them money. This once again reduces their profit. If they don't sell as many fish, or if they have several fish dying instead of selling them, they may think about the reasons why and improve their conditions. If for nothing else but financial reasons.
--> One sick fish might die, but in the long run, the conditions for the others might be improved.

To answer your question: I am in this hobby because I love fish. And that is exactly the reason why I criticize d20monsteroscar20's heroic behavior. By buying the sick fish, he financially supported a business which mistreates animals.

The only thing is Petland is a giant nation wide company as well as being in Europe, Asia, Canada, and Sout America, that has been around for almost 40 years, 3 oscars with a disease in one store that no one buys will not shut them down or probabaly do little to change their habits. Unless it is there whole fish section of the store, or if you write a compaint, then you may get somewhere. I do see your point Harley, but unless he really files a complaint, I just dont think that passing by the oscars will do much to change their habits.

Howdy,

I am not saying it will change the world. But maybe there is a competent manager, who notices that a) they lose more fish than normal b) they sell fewer fish than normal c) thay have more sick fish in their tanks than normal ("normal" compared to other stores). The manager may not worry about fish, but about sales.

Lastly, it's a question of conscience: Yes, d20monsteroscar20 saved on fish. But due to his action and the action of others like him, more fish will be put in the same conditions. If d20monsteroscar20 really wanted to help fish, he'd keep his money in his wallet and walk out.

Just my $0.02
(which I don't spend on sick fish) ;)

I guess it just brings up the great question

Is it ok to sacrafice one for many?

Guys listen...........The oscar was FREEEEEEEEEEEEE. I didnt buy it they were giving it away. and yes I understand both the arguments posted here, but you must remember that I m a fish lover and to see one suffer I will probably go out of my way to save him. No its not so ppl will think I m a hero or some of that crap but because I know if I was a cichlid( an oscar for example) I would like my owner to take gud care of me, because if he wont, he should just leave me in the river where I belong. He is about 8 or nine inches and lil shorter than my other oscars. I have him on a 29 right now cause its the biggest tank I m available. when everything get better for him I will give him to my neighbor, he has a 300 some gallons.
