i heard u can keep these amazonion frogs in captivity is there anything special about these frogs and are they poisoness in captivity if i ever got one it would go in my old tank i used to have my basilisk in or id buy a smaller one

they are not poisonous in captivity although like any amphib I would wash my hands before and after workign witht hem and would not want to touch my face

the toxins that these frogs carry is derived from the insects that they eat. if you were to feed your dart frog insects with potent venom or noxious chemicals (i.e. fire ants or many beetles) you would have a very poisonous frog. This would not affect you at all unless the toxins made its way into your blood stream so you could handle them so long as you do not have an open wound (but i would not recommend handling them at all since they stress so easily).

Most frogs are fed on a strict cricket diet in captivity and the toxins are lost. Dart frogs come in all sorts of colors and paterns and are the best animal to keep in elaborate vivariums or paludariums. They must be kept very moist and have access to loads of hiding places for them to be successful.

I have been reading up on getting one for a small coffee table terrarium that I just got but for now it is just an idea. I have never kept them personally but I have cared for a bunch at the museum that I used to work at and now the Zoo where I work.

They are not toxic in Capticity at all. Most are CB these days.

You need a solid glass tank for them. They are not fed a diet of crickets. Doing so causes fatty liver/ kidney disease. They main diet is fruit flies.

Definately something you NEED to research before you get them.

Elaborate vivs are not necessary but are a blast to build. :-) I have a few.

One main thing with them is DO NOT mix. Not only is it very frowned upon but it will likely result in dead frogs.

could you elaborate, I am interested now too. I did not know about the crickets and liver problems and both places where I have worked fed only crickets. Should I try and bring this up and get it changed?

I've always wanted to keep some myself as well, although couldn't really seem to find much info on how to keep them... but i'm just curious, is fruit flies the only diet you can/should feed them in captivity or are there other insects you can feed them instead???

Also, what would the minimum tank size need to be to keep a couple of them???
