In the wild, polar bears constantly patrol their area. It's just a much bigger area, so they look like they are walking around randomly. In a zoo setting, the area is smaller, but they still patrol it.

that makes sense, sure makes them boring to see in a zoo though. sure i'm glad to have seen them but if this is what they're reduced to, i'd rather we didn't place them in zoos
