I dont see why we cant discuss politics here. Yes this is a fish forum but it is also the lounge and is for anything NON-fish related. I spend more time on MFK then any other site. It is a damn shame we cant discuss things like politics and religion because some ones feelings may get hurt.

Just the way it is. But you answered your own question. Alot of people can take a discussion and share opinions no problem. But some people get wound up into thinking opinion is fact or get angry over a different view. Even if you have a discussion between 2, 3, or 4 people that won't get offended and keep it at a discussion you still have readers who might get offended by what your typing.

I see how much MFK means to everyone as a community. Means just as much to me. But to be honest I think it's probably good to stay away from such hot topics as well. Overworked mods don't have even more cleanup from complaints, less "time off" for members that get carried away. So I don't see a problem with the rule from that aspect.

lol Because some people don't see it as a "choice".. We've gotten too P.C. People think if it could offend their views they shouldn't have to see/view/hear. But that is society today IMO. IDK man.. just my thoughts.

Heres generally what happens....

A few people have civil adult discussions on a subject matter. In the past MODS have allowed them to continue on the basis that they remain civil. Here is where the problem is, the discussion no longer becomes civil and name calling and personal attacks occur. Invariably, somebody gets their panties in a bunch and things get out of control and require massive cleanups, infractions, etc.

Given the HUGE spectrum of beliefs, ages, experiences, and lifestyles here on MFK, this will and has always happened. I have yet to see a mature discussion occur ongoing on a "hot topic" debate. Its hard enough at times to debate various fish philosophies let alone our personal beliefs.

After years of being on MFK the subject threads that typically get closed tend to be the same over and over again, hence some MODS will kill the thread before it gets out of hand, which it will and always does. Each MOD handles these threads differently, I tend to let a thread go while I am online surfing MFK and just keep an eye on it, hence Im always eating popcorn.

It would be nice if people could have a mature intellectual discussion on various subject matters, but given that at times we cant even agree in fish keeping practices, I doubt it will happen...

Ok, I said my .02 now its time to grab lunch and go to the gym!
