Poll: Bare Bottom or 3m Colorquartz ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
fish live in environments that have substrate.. 3m colorquartz all the way!

Fish don't live in glass boxes as well. Wanna replicate that too?

What really sucks about b.b. is you can see the cabinet through the bottom glass. I like my black gravel about an inch in depth. All up to you though.

Paint the bottom glass or tape a cover over it.

@OP: Do what you may, BB will always improve the water quality. With gravel, there will ALWAYS be gunk trapped underneath. I don't care what anyone says. I've used gravel before. Switched to about 3 kinds. Every time I would gravel vac, I would never be able to get it all. Even if I did a 100% gravel vac, and I would always gravel vac for my water changes. Sand, meh, sand is alright.. but I have large fish, they dig into it and make hills and eventually some of it got into my filters. Switched to BB after sand.. Was a very big improvement. I would just gravel vac any waste or uneaten food and my water would be, and still is, Crystal clear. Makes it easier to do water changes every other day as well..

I don't understand this argument. Just because you are keeping fish in an aquarium, why should you not attempt to recplicate what would be considered a more natural environment for the fish to live in?

Don't you try to match the water parameters (PH, Temperature, etc) that these fish thrive in in the wild? You wouldn't say, "Fish from the amazon don't live in glass boxes in nature, so I'm going to keep them in 50F water."

In most BB tanks I've seen the fish look morose (yeah, look it up). And yes, they speak to me...they tell me they are bored out of their minds and are waiting for you to leave the tank uncovered for a few moments so that they can end it all.

I have 4 tanks, a Bare bottom (painted black), black SpectraQuatrz, Tile and a gravel/ river rock bottom. The bare bottom looks the best in my opinon, followed closely by the tile.

3m...have some to go in my 220 once it's up and I agree that I don't like bb tanks. I had it before and I didn't let it stay past a day....just to boring to me.

I think its all in the preference of looks :), but I personally think BB tanks are so un-natural looking and I don't understand why we as extreme hobbiest (which some of us are) would go through and pay so much for fish and tanks to not give it as antural look as possible. (Just my opinion) I have only used small smooth gravel in my tanks with a whitish/brown rive color, but with my newest project I will be trying sand. Good luck and can't wait to see the out come.
