If you had a choice between having a black unstable (but active) dat or a nice looking one that hid all the time, what would you rather have?
What's more important: looks or personality?

I will chose stable dat but I won't put anything to let the dat hide.
I will mix it with other type of fishes instead of putting hiding place.

i would choose any dat as long as it is healthy and eats
dont matter to me stable or unstable

I would check out the unstable One and see what potential he has in terms of markings and body shape. Obviously stable factor has been a big decider fr me over the years but the last 2 years I have often picked unstable ones,
E.g Few Months back, I picked 2 small IT (there were lots to pick and 3-4 stable ones but were still ugly). Anyway...One was stable And The other unstable, but it had split bar was petfectly symmetrical and full body/neck bands.
2 months later , guess which one is stable And fully hammering pellets????
The ugly Duckling is now a beauty.

I guess once u take that risk and pick the unstable one, which eventually turns stable Sooner or later in your tank, then you'll be more likely to pick
tigers not soley based on stable or not.

Back to the poll, I can't tick a box cause I rely on other factors when choosing. Also how they act in a small tank at lfs is totally different when put into monster tank with monster fish at home.

Good points Ade....As much we all love and appreciate a beautifully stable dat there are few other traits in a fish that annoy me more than them hiding most of the time so far the sake of the poll, I go with the active unstable dats.

I've had both kinds of dats and the ones that hide all day are much more annoying. Unless I drop a worm right by them, they'd be too shy to come out to eat it.

The unstable/active ones I have eat a lot more and grow much faster than the shy ones. Plus, imo you can get them to color up by adding black sand to the tank.

Really? Black substrate always helps color them up for you?

I'd pick the unstable one thats more active. And just remember just because you give a dat no place to hide doesnt mean it will get use to you and come out more. I have this one 12inch IT that ive had for almost 2years and it still likes to hide and stay unstable even though the other dats in the tank are not shy. Some dats just never get use to you....This guy comes out when hungry and thats it. I likes to hide behind the bigger dats and in the corners of the tank....Has always been this way.
