polleni

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
mine thankfully eats everything from krill to frozen foods to all pellets i have (kens, hikari). it's been pretty tame as far as aggression is concerned, but will definitely try and hold it's group against others. right now he can't keep up with the RTM and the jag that he's hanging with, so he's behind a divider. he's pretty responsive as far as feeding is concerned and he's showing good colors. growth is decent at ~1" increase since i got him around 6-8 weeks ago or so. hoping he gets around 7-8" by christmas time.

Most of the paratilapia can be kept in a 55 as a pair or larger when grouped. They are NOT very aggressive and I would think they would have problems with most central americans.

While they do get a bit on the large size - 20-30cm most stay around the 20cm range or a bit larger.

Spawns can be a bit large as with Centrals. Keep the tank warm 76-94 degrees fahrenheit and watch for ich as a disease that causes them trouble.

NOT SO. I have a 12" Paratilapia Polleni in with a 6" Uaru and a 5" H. Rotkeil and a 2" spotted black pleco in a 55 gal. ALL get along fine - I think my polleni is ready for a female though - he guards the Uaru from the dominant nature of the Rotkeil as if he was his mate.... pretty funny actually. The H. Rotkeil - under normal circumstance is silver with red fins, and is pretty consistantly a deep purple with red fins - pretty cool.

The Polleni is BIG - but is gentle. In my other tank i am growing out another poleni and that one is 2" long and showing very dominant behavior and holding own vs. 4" Rotkeil w/o any problems.

Fish vary in temperament. I have a female flowerhorn that is a sweety. Most people call them vicious. That's like calling every pit bull a killer... and you should know that isn't the case. It's a coin toss for aggression in most cases. But always plan for the worst. These fish should be kept in a tank larger than a 55. Overcrowding incites aggression.... and too many other problems to mention. But they are cool fish so get it!

My 8" male is not really mean, but is very territorial.

I got rid of my polleni when it was about 5" because it had turned into a real jerk. It chased everything in my 125 and when the other cichlids learned to stay away, it got after the clown loaches and giant danios. Beautiful fish, though. Very "personable" and not at all a picky eater. It occupied mostly the upper strata of my tank and was always first in line at feeding time.
